Took me awhile to finally get around to watch this series (4.5yrs) & boy, glad I did. ***A very “ultra” tiny smidge of a SPOILER ALERT*** So far I have no complaints about the show. It is a great show. Not gonna say it’s in par w/GOT.No! But, no doubt it’s totally worth your time folks.

The Viking era is an exciting one. I'm glad to see this series because too often of late, we are getting our history from film, not books, so perhaps a new generation can come to know this culture. We are getting a glimpse of a very unique, if savage way of life that helped shape Europe.The series itself has a wealth of legend to draw from and fill several seasons. The series opens in 793 AD, however, Ragnar's fate is beyond that.
Like Spartacus, he is a legendary figure and the writers of this series have a lot to play with in what was Europe's Dark Ages. So far so good for this series. The first episode, Rites of Passage, is a good introduction. I am hoping that since it is the work of the History Channel that we will get some authenticity in this series and not just entertainment.
Like I said, so far, so good. I love Vikings, I really, really do so I was thrilled to find out about this show. Season 1 proved to be historically inaccurate but taken for what it is, entertainment (turns out it being on the History Channel means nothing), it was good. In fact, I only wished there were more gorgeous blond Scandinavian men on the show.But by the end of the second season the show was a soap opera and I kept wishing someone would chop off Ragnar's head. The trouble with too many shows today is they try to appeal to men and women, which is definitely and unfortunately, the case here, with the women just, argh, being annoying soap opera women.Some things that might make you roll your eyes, too:-Accents: what's the deal with the accents? I mean, we know they're speaking a foreign language.-Quick trips: the show makes it seem like it took a couple of days to do a round trip to England, on a wooden boat, with a raid on the itinerary to boot.
-Ragnar seemed to have an open relationship with Lagertha but suddenly he's putting up with Aslaug's nagging about him flirting with a slave, and more nagging (again, soap opera).Let's see what season 3 brings. I started watching because from what I had seen of the trailer I was reminded of Pillars of the Earth. Sadly this short lived as I watch through the first episode. I managed about 20 minutes before I had to switch it off.The dialogue has a thick accent spoken in English. This would have had far more effect in a Norse or Scandinavian accent using subtitles.
If the English used was thick with accent. Although this bis a minor flaw and it aside. I am mainly bothered hugely by the plot shown. The Vikings shown here have gained their sea faring abilities from a traveller who bestowed a sun dial and sun stone which where used in there early navigation. Meaning that they can now navigate across the seas westwards to plunder and pillage away from there tribal conflicts.
The judicial system shown seemed entirely wrong. Vikings are tribal raiders. The chief of the village asks a vote on the convicted and then asks this convict what type of execution to choose. This is beyond all reasonable comprehension? The Vikings from what I have read would flay, pick out many stones from boiling water, impale and use all kinds of barbarous tortures, fails to make any sense with the politer execution.
